Customer Review: Acidity Meter - Caveat Emptor

I was surprised to discover that this is not a full-range pH meter - it is an acidity meter. The pH range of the dial is 3 to 8. On the side of the box it reads: Kelway Direct Reading Tester: SOIL ACIDITY: For Home and Garden Use. So, if you are trying to get good measurements in the alkaline range (i.e., at pH > 7.0) then this is not the device for you. Based on the fact that this information is omitted in the advertising for the item on the Amazon website, I am giving it 2 stars.
If you are working mostly in acid soils, you might like this item. I have used it in my slightly acidic soils and I get plausible readings.
Another little quirk not mentioned: the unit comes with special little pads (KCP: Kelway Conditioning Pads) that you must rub on the probe every time you do a soil test. According to the accompanying instructions, the 2 pads provided are good for "20 or more" readings - then you might have to acquire more of the pads from the manufacturer "at modest cost" - or alternately you can use "other very mild abrasives" whatever those might be.
Honestly, just a slight aftertaste of snake oil....
