Tools and Hardware Reviews of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MFCustomer Review: Best bet for truly sharp knives! Summary: 5 Stars
I've used benchstones. I've used clamp systems. Both will get the job done. However... I've sharpened every knife I own now with this little puppy and I'm here to tell you, this is money well spent! Yes, you have to work a little if the knife you're sharpening is quite dull. Guess what? You have to do the same with benchstones and clamp systems. SHOCK!!
I don't think it's possible to get a truly sharp (that is, literally sharper than a razor) edtge on a dull knife without working a bit. Let's face it, you're removing steel to shapen anything, and if you've got a lot of steel to remove it's going to take a bit of work to do it.
That said, this has got to be the easiest sharpening system to work with I've ever tried, and I think I've tried them all. Absolutely foolproof IF you follow the instructions AND watch what you're doing. As long as you attend to those two things, the results will amaze you. The feature of having two angles available is great, and I've yet to encounter a blade that couldn't be finely sharpened with one or the other of them. I've since ordered the "ultrafine" stones for the Sharpmaker, and WOW, are they worth the money! Puts that last bit of truly "scary sharp" on your blade.
All-in-all, I don't see myself using any of my other systems any more. This thing is just that good. Admittedly, it's not too great for really, really LOOOONG blades, but turn it over and use the bench feature on the bottom and it works fine there, too. Whaddaya want for your fifty bucks, perfection? Well, that's just about what you get!
Customer Review: Best knife sharpening solution I've used. Summary: 5 Stars
Using the sharpener is simple and comes with both a guide-book and DVD. I can do scissors, pins, axes and serrated blades and all kinds of ridiculous things but I've only used it for scissors and straight-edge knives. There are two different grits of sharpening stones and the sharpener provides two angles to work with, 40 degrees (for edges) and 30 for back bevels. Basically the smaller the angle the sharper the blade but it'll also wear out faster because you have less metal contacting the surface you're cutting.
I've been using this since I was a kid in Boy Scouts, and it's kept my camping and cooking tools in tip-top shape. Over the past 10 years or so I've purchased two of them, although the first didn't exactly wear out from use... I just gave it away to a friend.
Aside from maintenance, I also use this to repair knives that my friends have abused and dulled from years of neglect. The surprise I have after using and sharpening my friends' knives can only mean that you will have the same reaction to seeing how sharp your knives are supposed to be. A simple test I use to see if my knives are sharp enough is this: Does it cut through tomato skin easily or does it catch or squish? A properly sharpened knife should go through a fresh (or even squishy) tomato cleanly and without effort.
Pick one of these up! It'll last you a decade and make cooking that much more enjoyable.
Customer Review: Best of its type. Summary: 4 Stars
This is the most versitile and highest quality crock stick type sharpener around. It does take a little practice but after a few knives most people will have no problem if their knives are not damaged or very dull. If your knives are very dull you will need the diamond hones or rubber band some sandpaper to the sharpmaker stones as I did, the sandpaper won't last but it's cheap. Bottom line, slow for heavy sharpening, quick for touch up sharpening, and works with all types of blades unlike most sharpeners.
Customer Review: Best sharpener I've ever used Summary: 5 Stars
I've used several different types of sharpeners over the years, this is by far the best I've ever used. I also ordered the ultra fine rods, but don't really need them, the ones that come with the 204 get it as sharp as you need.
Customer Review: Best sharpener for a true edge Summary: 5 Stars
Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker
I use this for my everyday carry knives. As they say, the best way to keep a knife sharp is to never let it get dull. It takes a little time to learn how to properly use it, but the edge it produces is definitely one of quality.
