Tools and Hardware Reviews of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MFCustomer Review: Best sharpening set available. Summary: 5 Stars
I have been sharpening knives on flat stones by hand for many years. I just got a Spyderco Sharpmaker, and it's the best contraption I have ever used.
The stones are good quality. Similar cheaper brands have lumps on otherwise perfect stones, making them almost useless. Both the coarse and fine stones leave a relatively fine edge considering how well they remove metal.
The triangular shape of the stones makes them work very well for regular knives and serrated knives as well.
It comes with an instruction book that tells you exactly what to do. If you follow the instructions, you will get a very sharp edge. The only skill involved is holding the blade up and down, and that isn't hard at all.
The price looks high, but you get a total of 4 long stones (two fine, two medium) of good quality. It is well worth the price to be able to keep your knives sharp on your own instead of paying someone to do it, which adds up fast.
I don't recommend sharpening systems that involve clamping a guide system to the blade because they tend to slip and/or scratch the blade, are annoying to use for quick touch-ups, and don't actually maintain a good angle along the whole blade due to the mechanics involved.
Customer Review: Better than electric knife sharpeners Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned a Chef's Choice knife sharpener for years but was never completely happy with it. It got my knives sharp, but the edges seemed to be rough and the sharpness seemed fade pretty quickly. Also I wondered if it was damaging the blade after repeated uses. I saw the Spyderco Tri-Angle sharpener and it reminded me of one which I had owned years ago and I was pretty happy with. I ordered the Spyderco and it is amazing. It is so easy to use and it gives VERY sharp edges. I just give a knife 10 swipes per side and it is amazing how sharp of an edge I get. I've always heard that sharp knives are safer. Well after using the Spyderco I'm not so sure. A couple of times I've accidentlly knicked myself with an edge and cut myself. This never happened with knives I'd sharpened with other sharpeners. The Spyderco came with two sets of stones: White fine and Gray Medium. I've only used the fine stones so far and they are amazing. At some point apparently I'll have to switch to the medium stones to re-tune the edges. I definitely recommend this product over the Chef's Choice sharpeners.
Customer Review: Blade maintenance kit Summary: 4 Stars
The Spyderco TriAngle Sharpener is an outstanding, all in one, blade maintenance kit for those wanting a simple system. This product is best targeted to the beginner to moderately skilled sharpener. The big flaw in the system is it's difficulty to re-profile blades which have been abused, damaged or improperly sharpened. Given the target customer, the "improperly sharpened" knife will probably be the first knives to test the system by users.
If your blade is new, never been sharpened improperly or abused, the system will produce a great back bevel, and cuttin edge which will easily shave, slice paper with ease or any of the other sharpness testing methods. I am not a good sharpener, but using this system has produced the sharpest knives I have ever been able to achieve on VG10, D2, 154CM steel.
With poorly sharpened knives [of which I had more than a few...] the use of a larger water, Arkansas or oil-stone to produce a starting profile will be needed. Once re-profiled, the Syderco performs wonderfully. If you don't use a more aggressive stone, your blade will simply "slide" along the Syderco stones, rather than grind.
Hint: while using the progressively finer Spyderco stones, if your blade seems to slide rather than grind, you've moved to the finer stone too fast. You'll need to go back to the coarser stone.
The included "infomercial" DVD is a wonderful instruction resource. Every product should have one.
Customer Review: Can't complain Summary: 4 Stars
I got what I ordered, in the time frame promised. The transaction was what I expected, so I can't give it five stars. Still, I'd buy from this vendor again. I actually haven't used the product yet, so I can't vouch for the value. But the DVD and the accommpaning printed brochure make me think this product is fine.
Customer Review: Clean cuts again! Summary: 5 Stars
Our previous knife sharpener disappeared during a kitchen remodel a year ago, and all efforts to find it were in vain. My husband, who is nearly obsessed with the need to have knives at their sharpest, was becoming more and more distressed. Enter the Spyderco Triangle! Our kitchen knives are now all dangerously sharp, and he even watched the video to sharpen my scissors, which before had to be taken out for shapening. We are both impressed and happy with Spyderco.
