Tools and Hardware Reviews of Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker Knife Sharpener 204MFCustomer Review: DONT BUY!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I received the Spyderco model 204 knife sharpener today, May 11, 2010 and this is the worst knife sharpener ive ever used. I have recently ordered the Spyderco Native knife which is excellent however i had gotten a knick in the blade from my physics project :( and i didnt have a knife sharpener anymore(the last one i had was when i was really into knives but i lost it) so i figured that i would order from the same brand. The knife originally was extremely sharp and i was trying to target the tip of the blade where the knick was. I watch the video included, did what it said to do while watching the video and it dulled the blade. Over all its still relatively sharp but fails in comparison to what it used to be. DONT BUY THIS!!! I know what you are thinking, "well maybe i messed up during the instructional video," no i didnt because i rewatched it, took bullet points on instructions and it was EXACTLY what i did. This fails, which is a shame because i love the knives they have.
Customer Review: Does a good job and easy to use Summary: 5 Stars
I'm an amateur knife sharpener. I wanted the best but cheapest option, and this does a good job. It's wonderful to be able to cut with a sharp knife again. It feels even sharper than the factory. It stores in a compact container, which holds the stones and brass protectors. Simple, brilliant design.
Customer Review: Does not work for me Summary: 1 Stars
I researched knife sharpeners. This one came up consistently as the best. Youtube vids et al, showed how easy and effective. Alas, after probably thousands of swipes with all my knives they are no better than when I started. I've switched to the pull-thru kind of sharpener - not perfect but it works in 3 or 4 swipes. Solved.
Customer Review: Does the job! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great tool for folks who want and need their knives much sharper than average. It doesn't sharpen them for you, but with a little practice, putting a new edge on your knives becomes fairly easy. The infomercial-style training DVD could put you to sleep, but it in-fact gives proper direction on the use of the product. I was even able to re-sharpen 2 seem rippers for my wife, using the edge of the rods free-hand. The back of the case has two slots that hold the rods flat so that you can use it almost like a whet stone. Not for the un-coordinated, but not rocket science either. Very good value.
Customer Review: Don't be scared by the complexity Summary: 5 Stars
I looked into a number of different knife sharpeners before choosing this one - based mostly on its positive reviews. Truth be told, I was a little nervous that compared to some of the basic knife sharpeners that this one would be difficult to use. It looks so much more complicated and downright alien compared to the other models on the market.
That turned out not to be the case at all. The sharpener is really no more complicated to use than any of the pull-through models. It even comes with an, admittedly cheesy, instructional DVD that walks you through how to use it. Yes, the Spyderco sharpener requires a a couple more steps to get the absolute best edge. The results, however make that extra effort completely worthwhile.
Beyond getting a razor sharp edge in a way that other sharpeners never were able to for me, this one allows you to sharpen other items that pull-through sharpeners never would. So don't be scared by the looks of this thing, it really is simple and effortless to use.
