The sharpmaker makes it easy to put a shaving-sharp edge onto nearly anything made out of metal!!! The included DVD and pamphlet show you how to sharpen nearly anything, from knives, to oddly shaped knives, hatchets, potato peelers (which it did AWESOME on, by the way), fishing hooks, screwdrivers and much more!

I have had other sharpeners, from plain stones to sharpening jigs, but this sharpening system works far better, and faster. I like the way all the parts fit together into a nice storage case, but really the most important part is how well the knives come out. Razor sharp, easy.

After reading the negative reviews on Amazon I was worried there was a big learning curve to the sharpmaker, but was I wrong. I had tried on various stones by hand, but I could never get the razor sharp like they came from the factory and in some cases not even a good working edge. I was very surprise when I got the sharpmaker and watched the DVD; there was little talk of basic technique for using the sharpmaker, mostly how to sharpen different things. I tried on a cheap knife, I was amazed. It took me awhile going through each stage but at the end it was at least twice as sharp as I'd ever had it including from new! I tried a few other cheap knives and it worked great. I moved onto decent knives with even better results. It can take some time but I definitely think it is worth it because I can actually get shaving sharp edges with little skill. So far I have sharpened a variety of steels including 1095, S30v, 1085, aus 8, 8cr13mov and d2.

Also it is very versatile and can do much more then I thought. Great system at a reasonable price.

To see the plain knife instructions from the video search for this on YouTube: VWL1UsppIeA I saw warnings about the long complicated instructions for this "sharpening system" that made me leery and I'm very comfortable reading instructions. But don't worry about the learning curve. The length of the instructions is due to the fact that you can sharpen anything with this including nail clippers and potato peelers. For a plain edge knife it's two pages, most of which is pictures. It's a fantastic tool. The video is fabulous but you don't need to watch it to use the sharpener. The entrepreneur behind this gadget is a great teacher. He starts with how our prehistoric ancestors sharpened stone tools. Any cook who knows how to chop should own this - it's as simple slicing an onion - and for anyone into tools you are going to love this thing.
