Tools and Hardware Reviews of SteamFast SF-226 Handheld Steam Cleaner

Customer Review: Does work however....
Summary: 3 Stars

The process takes entirely too long. I purchased this to clean tile grout in my kitchen. I just moved and thought the grout was brown, since the tiles themselves were squeaky clean. I was wrong. It blew away the grease/etc that had accumulated on the grout but a 12X10 kitchen took about 8 hours. On one fill up I was able to only clean about 3 sq ft of tile then had to wait in between for the unit to cool enough to open to refill then reheat. It also sprays alot of water (which is probably why I had to refill so often)so I went through at least 12 terry rags mopping up behind it. It does the job but unless they increase the reservoir size I would never repurchase it. When this one dies I'll be spending a little more money to get a better unit.

I bought this for my wife that can not use chemicals. This little machine sure can clean.

Customer Review: Good for Small jobs, very small jobs
Summary: 3 Stars

I looked around for information on these things and it was pretty sketchy at best. So I decided to buy one of these, a cheap option at $32, and learn about cleaning with steam. First of all this unit only holds 6 ounces of distilled water which can last as long as about 8 minutes providing you don't tilt the unit over far enough that the water blows out with the steam. When it's full that's not very far and the attachments don't flex at all, all you can do is position the brushes to the closest angle you can find that works.

This unit works well for small tight jobs, say behind a toilet or pipe that you can't get to well. But even a toilet can take 2 or three fillings. If you going to tackle a shower or a floor you'll want to go for something bigger or your going to be there for a very long time. This unit would work well on small parts or tools where you can elevate them so you don't have to tip it at all. 8 minutes would work for that.

I have some rather large water deposits in my shower and this unit was pretty useless on those. But after some research I discovered I could pour white vinegar on them and leave it sit for 30-60 minutes and then this unit was helpful in breaking them up. It did take many passes and the 8 minute limit was a killer. This unit was very good at taking off scum that collects around the drain in my shower, it was quick and easy. It also did well on hard to remove water stains in the toilet, another small job, much smaller with steam.

All in all, it was a cheap learning device, but I think I am going to give it to my kid and go for something bigger as I just hated the constant refilling of this 6 ounce unit. I am sure I spent half of my time refilling and half of my time using it.

Now to figure out how much water the larger units hold before I buy one, and with the corded units you don't have to worry about loosing water to tilting. :)

Update: I discovered Bissel sells one of these, looks exactly like it except different color, but more importantly they sell a bunch of attachments that can make this one work a lot better. A grout attachment, a scraper, an angle attachment and most interesting of all in a flexible extension hose that would mean you wouldn't have to tilt it, making the water last the maximum amount of time rather then getting blown out when you tipped it too far in any direction. So get this one, it's cheaper and faster to get, and Amazon would always be my first choice anyway, then go to the Bissel web site and order the options you need, that you can't find on Amazon and you'll have a much better tool

Customer Review: Good little product
Summary: 5 Stars

I had one similar to this for years, but it just stopped working. Perhaps I should have used distilled or purified water in it, but the previous unit didn't say anything about that. This newer model DID tell me it's best to use purified or distilled water (for the removal of the minerals that can destroy the steam chamber). Does not last terribly long with jobs, but it does the trick! Was able to steam out a sofa cushion (which had a stain on it ... blew that right out!), clean the kitchen fixtures and the bathroom. Overall, a good addition to the family. :)

Customer Review: Great Low-cost Steamer
Summary: 5 Stars

This little steamer does exactly what I wanted it to do. I can use it to clean mirrors and windows and it helps remove some of the yicky things growing on my bathroom ceiling. I primarily bought this to steam my furniture and clothes and it works really well for that! It's not a continuous flow of steam like most fabric steamers are, but it's great for spot steaming (like to flatten a collar). The jet of steam is very powerful and very hot so I recommend testing it on some delicate fabrics first.
