Tools and Hardware Reviews of Streamlight 51001 TT-2D 2 D-Cell Xenon/10-LED Twin-Task Flashlight, Anodized BlackCustomer Review: Streamlight TT-2D Twin-Task Flashlight Summary: 4 Stars
I now have purchased three of these, two for myself and one as a gift. My two are in general household duty. Remarkably, both are running on batteries discarded from conventional flashlights. For common applications like finding small parts dropped on the floor, either of the two LED modes are excellent. The krypton bulb position gives only average performance compared to a Mag-Lite, but this really isn't important 99% of the time. In fact, the batteries I am using are so low that the krypton bulb barely lights, yet the LEDs are fully bright
Customer Review: Streamlight 51001 TT-2D 2D-Cell Twin-Task Flashlight Summary: 5 Stars
I love this one. The Xenon bulb is not particularly effective, the flashlight is heavy,
and you need up to 3 clicks to turn it on/off. I still love it. It is so much
fun walking home from work [3 miles] in dark winter nights. I used
it all winter with the same batteries, the Xenon bulb is barely visible, but
the LEDs keep going. It's not only fun-fun-fun, but if I were ever attacked,
I am sure it would be as effective to defend myself as an uzi if not better.
I have the "titanium" version and it looks like a piece of [industrial] art.
It is superbly made. I had one minor problem with it and customer support
sent me the replacement part immediately.
Customer Review: Superbright ??? Summary: 4 Stars
Nothing superbright about this light. I expected more out of the xenon bulb. My whole reason for buying this light was to have a good led light for general purpose lighting while working or walking...which this light does an EXCELLENT job of...but I also wanted a really bright light for emergency purposes...
I dont think the xenon bulb really puts out as much light as the leds..and therefore I have yet to really use the xenon bulb mode for anything other than just turning it on and reliving the disappointment from time to time.
Its a good light..I would probably buy another if this one ever failed me because it is quality made and the led capability seems to be working for me. I do hvac work and the light is used for working in dark locations and for general walking in dark locations.

Three years since I bought this light. I think I lost it last week and now Im buying another. I used this light in some of the most grimiest and abusive industrial situations that a flashlight could see...its been dropped, tossed around...generally abused...and this light was still in excellent shape when I last saw it last week...lol
Im buying another... I could buy a lot of newer lights...or a light with a brighter bulb....but I have a pelican light for a real bright flashlight.... I never needed any more than the 5 LED mode with this light.... It is a good light...and I want to continue using this very same light....
Customer Review: Well worth the price Summary: 5 Stars
Like a lot of people who will be looking at this light, I am a long time user of Mag lights. They are bull tough and well made. Well, this light is made even better, and the handle section offers a much more positive grip than a Mag (it even has a lanyard on the end). The Xenon light is brighter than my Mag of equivalent batteries - it does not, however, have near the range of focus that a Mag does. That isn't a huge problem as any 2 D cell is better used for fairly close work anyway. Leave the long distance spot for the 6 cell. There is plenty of light for lighting up a trail or barn. The Xenon will light up reflective trail markers for at least 200 feet, much further than you're likely to be able to see through brush or trees.
As far as the LED portion of the light goes, I am very pleased. The switch has three lighting positions - 5 LED, 10 LED, and the Xenon, in that order. Under fifteen feet or so, there isn't much brightness difference noticeable between the 5 and the 10, but you can really see a change past that. On ten LEDs, the light is useful up to about 40 feet, more if you happen to be in a cave. Most of the time, I just use the 5 LEDs as I generally only need something for under 15 feet. This light will be great for catfishing - switch it to 5 LEDs and just leave it on so it's handy and doesn't get lost on the ground. And 5 LEDs are all you'll need to walk the most darkened trail. Battery life is long enough not to worry about running them down when using the LEDs.
One little problem I have is with the lanyard. It's attached with a split ring to a permanently attached point on the base. It is not very stable to stand on end with the lanyard in place - it will do it, just tip easy. However, you can remove the lanyard from the ring and reinstall differently to make it easier to remove. During a power failure, it's nice to have a flashlight that can be stood up on its end. This one doesn't have the Mag's candle feature, but with ten LEDs bouncing off a white ceiling, it will give good emergency lighting for a room or used in a tent. Of course, the lanyard also gives you the ability to hang it overhead, which is difficult with a Mag.
All in all, this is a worthwhile step up from a 2 D Mag, even at twice the price.
UPDATE: I've had this now for 6 months and use it pretty much daily (well, nightly mostly) and am still very impressed. The black coating hasn't scratched a bit, even with my tendency to use flashlights as small hammers. Batteries last and last - and even after you see a noticeable reduction in the Xenon, the LEDs seem as bright as ever. I haven't tried submersing it yet, but rain and water-hose spray have no effect whatsoever. I need to buy another one as I still carry a 3 cell Mag in my truck because I use this one too much to keep it in the truck for an emergency. Christmas is coming up and this would be a wonderful gift for just about anyone, especially those people who always have a 2 dollar flashlight that never works when the lights go out. Reality is that most people won't pay 35 bucks for a flashlight (let alone those awesome $300 lithiums), but there is solid value in a light that actually works and will continue working despite the weather and other perils. The next one I buy won't go in my truck, but in my wife's car to replace her Mag light. (Don't get me wrong-Mags are great lights and I will continue using all of mine) I'm getting preachy, but buy one for your mother, aunt, or grandmother who lives alone and would never think about getting a quality light. Give one as a housewarming present - a present that will still be working in 15 years. Get one for that hard to shop for sibling. Give one to your dad, just because all dads like flashlights, don't they? You won't be disappointed and neither will they.
