Tools and Hardware Reviews of Streamlight 66118 Stylus Pro Black LED Pen Flashlight with Holster

Customer Review: Decent light for the money, except...
Summary: 3 Stars

The good: Overall, this is a decent little gadget. It's really bright, super efficient, and runs on AAA batteries you can get anywhere. Of course, it's not a spotlight or anything, but I would certainly say this flashlight holds its own against the Minimag's brightness. I would probably recommend this light if you are absolutely strapped for cash and need a pen light (but see below).

The bad: Well for starters, this light is not particularly well built. It's hard to explain, but it just feels hulky and cheap. The cap has a squeakyness to it that attests to this. Also, the clicky switch on the back is difficult to depress, requiring you to really dig in with your thumb to turn on the light. It's not the end of the world, but if you want a user friendly, well built light, the Stylus Pro may not be for you.

My second issue is that while running this light for approximately 15 minutes consecutively, one of the original Duracell batteries that it came with exploded. The battery was not expired, and was in the light for about a month prior, with intermittent use. It is entirely possible that the battery was the culprit, but I suspect it has something to do with the design of the flashlight since I have never had an issue with Duracells before.

I sent the light to Streamlight, and they promptly remitted a (supposedly) brand new replacement, which was DOA. At first, I couldn't even swap out the batteries since they were stuck firmly in the light. To make a long story short, I managed to pry them out using a screw and I found they were wrapped in cellphane, which caused them to become stuck inside. In any event, I tried new batteries -- to no avail. I also noticed that the reflector appears to have been warped and wavy.

I contacted Streamlight, and they are supposed to be shipping me a new light, which I intend to promptly sell on Ebay upon receipt.

Preon II comparison:

In the interim, I splurged and purchased the 4Sevens Preon II and I could not be happier with it. The Preon is orders of multitude above the Stylus and IMHO is well worth the $45 outlay. The Preon has a very crisp and well made clicky switch, is waterproof to 12 feet, has 7 modes -- including 3 brightness levels, is made with a Cree led, is smaller and lighter than the Stylus pro, feels extremely well built and sleek, and maxes at a whopping 120 lumens. It boasts a noticeably superior build, without the "squeakyness" and bulky feel of the Stylus pro. (If you buy the Stylus, you will quickly see what I mean by "squeakyness.") If you can spare some more cash I would definitely recommend the Preon over the stylus pro. However, as mentioned above, if $20 is your budget go for the Stylus Pro.

Customer Review: Drawing with light.
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this pen to draw with light in my photography and it's simply the PERFECT tool for the job. Not only is it small for good detail, and super bright, but you can half press down on the button to quickly turn it on and off so you don't have one continuous line.

Customer Review: Excellent Flashlight
Summary: 5 Stars

I was expecting an ordinary light from this flashlight. But I received a very bright light from it.

This flashlight is a rugged made one and it has exceeded all my expectations.

thanks for an excellent product. Worth every penny.

Customer Review: Excellent Flashlight
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very compact flashlight, (about the size of a felt tip marker), that is well constructed. The LED light is extremely bright. I received this item in 2 business days complete with batteries.

Customer Review: Excellent Light
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an amazing light. It's actually almost too bright for my purposes, and after two weeks of moderate use, it shows no sign of dimming.
