Tools and Hardware Reviews of Surefire G2-LED G2 80 Lumens Runtime: 2 Hours Nitrolon® body LED flashlightCustomer Review: Hard to beat Summary: 5 Stars
The G2 LED is a modern update of what quickly became a classic, the G2. This is an inexpensive (for a Surefire) hard working light that will serve a myriad of uses. The new LED bulb give you more output than the G2 (80 lumens vs 60) and a much longer run time. Eventually as you use your powerful 80 lumen beam the batteries will run down, but instead of a dead flashlight you will still have several hours of useable light from the LED. The increased price over the G2 is quickly recouped in the money you will save in batteries.
Customer Review: Lighter than 6P Summary: 4 Stars
I have a 6P and was looking for a spare and decied to try the G2. The G2 is lighter than the 6P and has a different grip surface. The G2 does not get has hot as the 6P when in use for more than 15 minutes, otherwise funtion and fit are the same as the 6P
If your looking for a lighter alternative to the 6P, the G2 is a good choice.
Customer Review: MADE IN THE USA. THE BEST REASON TO BUY IT. Summary: 5 Stars
Other reviews have preferred a FENIX flashlight due to more lumens but I chose the SUREFIRE. Here are my reasons: 1) it's MADE IN THE USA not China under the BUY AMERICAN ACT, 2) FENIX has a poor website so I didn't have a lot of confidence in the product, 3) SUREFIRE's unconditional warranty. Spend the money on a SUREFIRE and save an American worker's job.
Customer Review: Misleading stats... Summary: 3 Stars
While the G2 LED is a sturdy, reliable light source there is a major failing (at least with the claimed specifications) that need to be noted before one decides to purchase this light. The implication of the description(on Amazon at least) implies that this light will run at 80 lumen's for 12 hours. This clam is FALSE! At best, you will get around 3 hours, before it drops down to around ~30 and below, as the batteries are depleted. Even Surefire's site ([...]) now states this (even though it previously had the false 12 hour claim).
If you are looking for a light that has a sustained level of "tactical" lighting for 10+ hours, go elsewhere. If you need a small durable light with a minimal amount of tactile lighting time (< 3 hours), then the G2 LED is your light...
Customer Review: Nice Tactical Light Summary: 4 Stars
The Surefire G2-LED 80 Lumens flashlight is a great light. But markets are changing and there was once a time when Surefire cornered the tactical flashlight world but the landscape has shifted and there are many other companies that provide very high quality flashlights.
Basics:
Runtime is 12 hours on 2 CR123 lithium batteries. It is constructed of lightweight, corrosion-proof Nitrolon and aerospace-grade aluminum which has a nice texture and comes in a variety of different colors. The LED flashlight will last forever so there is no need to worry about changing the bulb.
Following is my breakdown:
Light
The LED light is very bright. Some of the reviews complain that it is not bright enough but there is very little difference between 80 lumens and 120 lumens (yes, I have tested them out in numerous situations and environments). The beam is a solid very white and bright light that provides good coverage for a small to medium sized area. It is much brighter than a 2 D cell Maglite. It has decent throw but not the best. It tends to spread out with distance as opposed to a narrow beam of light. Depending on the environment that you are working in this may be a benefit to you. The aerospace-grade aluminum lamp piece will get warm when the light is on so use caution.
Tail Switch
The tail switch functions as designed and can be used for momentary on or twist the tail cap for constant use.
Body
The body is very strong and durable with a great finish. The head is made out of aerospace-grade aluminum and the paint will scratch and come off over time. Although small, this light will be able to take abuse and still function flawlessly. You can buy a lanyard kit as an add on accessory if you have the need for a lanyard.
Uses
As a tactical light the Surefire G2-LED is a very good light and I have no complaints.
1. This is a great light to be utilized if you work in law enforcement or military to conduct residential or building searches. It can be utilized in small to medium size buildings but you won't have the throw. So, if distance of your light throw is a priority then this is not the light to choose. A better option is a minimum of a 250 lumen light. This light is also efficient to use when searching ships, planes, buses or trains.
The G2 can easily and comfortably fit in your pants or shirt pocket. There are many options for functional sheaths that can be utilized on belts, tactical vests or MOLLE equipment. The LED light is bright enough to temporarily blind and disorient an assailant by impairing his night-adapted vision. This light does NOT have the ability to strobe which is an excellent feature to have in a tactical light.
2. It is a great light for an EDC kit (remember to carry extra spare batteries). If space is a consideration in your EDC bag then this light is a good fit. You can utilize a sheath to attach to Molle or PALS attachments which can be very handy. I wouldn't recommend this as a primary light as you may end up eating a lot of batteries which can get expensive - even with a 12 hour run time.
3. The G2 as sold does not come with a pointed bezel for self-defense measures. The bezel would be another worthwhile add on. Without the bezel the G2 probably could be used as an impact weapon but I would not expect too much of a result with this type of use.
4. It will work as a good addition for camping and backpacking, or an emergency disaster-preparedness kit. It is also small enough to carry for every day use.
Again, it is important to remember that flashlight technology over the last few years has been rapidly changing and advancing. Because of the ever changing environment there are many flashlight options available today. When it comes to flashlights especially in a tactical environment it is always critical to carry more than one. I prefer a tactical light that has the ability to strobe.
Overall I highly recommend the Surefire G2-LED light and have no problem carrying it as part of my gear.
