Tools and Hardware Reviews of Tersano lotus LBU100 Sanitizing SystemCustomer Review: Didn't work long, and never for some things Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this with high hopes. At first it worked pretty well on everything but strawberries and grapes. I think I got a cycle to finish on a batch of strawberries once...ever. Maybe a couple times with grapes. Yes, I tried bottled water. Yes, I ran it through multiple cycles (up to 10). It just would not work on those two things.
Now, at 1.5 years old and rarely used in the last 6 months, it works on nothing. I'm ready to toss it or give it to Goodwill. I spent the money to join an organic CSA for this summer.
Customer Review: Disappointed, never really got it to work. Summary: 2 Stars
I was SOOoo excited about his product. I have kids and sick family members and the fact that I would have something to clean and steralize that wouldn't be so toxic to them really excited me!! I opened the product, read the manual a couple times before using (in the car the day before and in bed that night! LOL!) I was heart broken when the first "F1" warning came up. The machine stopped because it was running for too long, water oxygenation had only reached 97%. Ok, I thought it needed a couple dry-runs to get it going. After SEVEN dry runs and my machine never completing a 100% oxygenation my heart was breaking.
I gave it a rest for a day. The third day it charged to 100% on the first try!! I was excited again! Although the 15 minute "count down" didn't kick in which concerned me (it has an automatic countdown so you know that after 15 minutes the water oxygenation begins to quickly deteriorate, the water turns back to plain old safe water). I started a second try with some fruit in the bowl. It didn't charge, only made it to 98% until the error warning. My excitement waned as after the 3rd and 4th time still no 100% charge. I gave up. Eleven tries and it only succeded once. I didn't even open the Terasno wet mop I bought and try that with the base unit.
I emailed Lotus with hopes I had been doing something wrong. My nearly instant reply (alright!) said that perhaps my tap water was too contaminated to be completely oxygenated. I wasn't excited. One of the main selling points for me was that it used tap water, just plain 'ole tap water. The thought of needing to purchase water for using it just cinched (sp) it for me. The product didn't live up to my expectations, or simply didn't work as it says it should.
Perhaps your water is better(?). I would not NOT recommend the product, but be prepared if you water is "too contaminated" for the item not to work. It's a FANTASTIC consept that I'm sure will go far. I'm still wondering if there was a glich with the machine??? It begin to charge great, then I would hear a high pitched tone, not a squeel or screach, just a high pitch tone, then the charging would slow waaaayyy down. The tone would fluctuate in and out. Perhaps it was the machine.
Customer Review: Do your research before taking the plunge Summary: 3 Stars
Before I start, I have to state that I do not own this product and merely want to make a comment on the general state of this technology. As I am obiligated to rate this item per Amazon review rule, I am give it a neutral "3" and this rating in no way reflects positively or negatively on what I think of this particular product.
Using ozone to sanitize food product is in fact a proven technology as advertised, and it has been used to treat water and food for decades. There is no doubt that this technology works! I am sure you can find many articles discussing this and the technology has been patented as well. I personally think it is a wonderful idea as it functions without leaving any traces unlike normal disfectants but consumers should consider some of the possible drawbacks.
First and foremost, as a scientist myself, I'd love to find out how this product is generating ozone so easily, and I am sure they are guarding this as a trade secret. (Background: ozone is normally made by essentially electrifying oxygen, a process that consumes a tremendous amount of power. Think the smell in the air after a lightening storm, that's it.) So how long and how much power does it take this system to create a batch of ozone water? And just how much ozone is generated? I ask this not to cast doubt on this system but because ozone is an irrantant to skin and your respiratory system and typically recognized as a toxic gas. So too much may not be a good thing.
Secondly, ozone has a rather short life span, so you can't just make it and use it later. How short you ask? About 15 minutes at room temperature when dissolved in water. It's longer at colder temperature and shorter at hotter temperature. And after that, what you have it just the water you start with (minus the germs of course).
I am not here to endorse nor bad-mouth this product, but merely to present facts and hope someone who has their hands on this system will do a comprehensive review on just how effectively it works.
Customer Review: Easy & Great Clean up. Summary: 5 Stars
Being a person that likes to eat "the dirty dozen"...strawberries, apples, etc, I have learned that even store bought organic isn't as safe as we are led to believe. This product is simple to use. I just put in a batch of grapes and the indicator told me (F1) that I had to run it through 2 more times to make them safe to eat. Tersano, the Lotus manufacturer, states that if you get (F1) and rinse 3 times, the product will be safe to eat. (Even if you get the f1 after the 3rd time.) How do I know? The customer service people really take the time to explain the machine and you can ask a lot of questions.
Also, with the food incidents that we keep hearing about with lettuce, spinach etc. why risk it?
I use the sanitizer water to clean the kitchen, bathroom, door handles and light switches.
Additionally, I found the company representatives very helpful at providing guidance and product information. They were quick (at not cost) to replace a faulty unit and sent it to me with a shipping label. All I had to do was pop my other one in the box and UPS picked it up.
If this was "junk" of a "scam" I doubt that TIME MAGAZINE would have listed it as a "best investions 2006." That is for the reader to decide.
Customer Review: Everyone should have one! Summary: 5 Stars
I have had my lotus for six months now and LOVE it! I got it because I was nursing and wanted to stop eating pesticides and cleaning with chemicals with my baby in the house. I use this to clean everything, even mop the floors! It truly does sanitize things and removes odors. I even use it to 'strip' and sanitize my cloth diapers when they get smelly or leaky due to soap residue. This is fantastic and so much healthier than using chemicals. It is amazing that you can also lengthen the shelf life of produce by sanitizing it and even reduce your risk of salmonella or e-coli exposure. Get one! One tip if you ever have trouble go to their web site and see the troubleshooting guide. I was having trouble with the 'high contaminate warning' b/c our water is so full of minerals. I use well filtered water now and it works everytime!
