Tools and Hardware Reviews of The Giving Tree

Customer Review: I do not think this sends the best message to kids
Summary: 2 Stars

I love my children and would do anything to help them. But I do not think this book sends the right message to children. I do not think it is right for the tree to allow herself to be chopped down so the boy can build a boat. Perhaps I am missing something, but I just do not understand why I would read this to my kids, especially my daughter.

Customer Review: Repulsive Message
Summary: 1 Stars

I have no idea why this book still appeals to people. Many laud its message of "unselfishness." "Unselfish" would be a fruit tree sharing its fruit. This story shows the progression from taking-for-granted to bullying to murder -- and we're supposed to applaud the tree for cooperating in its own destruction. Our schools work hard to teach anti-bullying strategies: self-respect, saying "no," getting help if you can't stop the bully yourself -- and then teachers will sit down and read this to kids. True caring and giving are beautiful things; this book appears to approve of having so little sense of goodness that it is "loving" to encourage a normal (i.e. self-focused) little boy to grow into an unhappy jerk. Love holds fast to what is good; it is courageous and strong. Supinely rejoicing in being able to assist your abuser in abusing you further (in the process destroying his/her own inner goodness) is not loving, giving, caring, or unselfish. It is destructive and unkind. It's unfortunate that Silverstein's reputation as a cute-for-kids author has kept many people from seeing what the book actually says.

Customer Review: So Many Themes Packed in this Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

My interpretation of this book is that it provides a timeless tale about a parent's self-sacrificing, unconditional love for a child..an imperfect child. Wonderful metaphor that works for me!!

Customer Review: The Giving Tree
Summary: 5 Stars

The book has a valuable lesson for children and adults, it is about sharing and caring for others.

I am VERY disappointed in both Amazon and the supplier for this book. I never recieved this (The Giving Tree), or any of the selections I ordered and was asked to review...I did write the dupplier and though, through the tacking, I said it was delivered on a certain date and time, I was home at the time and I recieved no package...I wrote the supplier, but they only asked ofr the tracking number which I gave them and have never heard from them again...a disappointing experience, that makes me hesitate to order from here again. Regrets, Dennie Boettcher
