This is my second Touch Free Trash Can. The first one lasted 5 years and I have no complaints. The lid on the first one finally wore out (the plastic gear broke) but, after 5 years it was to be expected. I ordered another one through this site on Amazon and it arrived quickly, packaged well, and worked fine at first. It was quieter than the first one and the lid opened and closed a little slower, but it worked well. After a couple months, it no longer works at all. It is not the batteries....I replaced the batteries and it still won't work. It does not open or close AT ALL. The User Manual claims free replacement but you have to pay return shipping of defective part and send a check for $9.95 for postage of replacement part. That is not the problem. The problem is contacting the company. The website that is published in the User Manual is not a trusted website. The phone number the User Manual says to call is not operational. I found another phone number and it is answered by an answering machine that says someone will call back, but they don't.
Does anyone have a recommendation? I have never tried to return anything I purchased on Amazon before. Does Amazon have anyone who could help me?

If you like convinience, then this is the trash can for you. How many times do you have your hands full of trash and just need that extra hand to open the lid? Not any more! This lids flips right open, you throw your trash in it, and then it closes back up. It works great, looks great, and all my friends think it's cool! My daughter looks for stuff to throw out just so she can watch it work.Customer Review: The world's greatest garbage can

Love this garbage can! We got this one as a Christmas gift for my in-laws. We already had a couple of our own. No need to lift smelly can lids. Touchless is the way to go! Although I admire the ingenuity of hands-free design, in execution, this trash can is not worth the money and frustration you pay for. I must dissuade future buyers from considering this. While my 2007 unit worked for a year, it was never reliable. There were many, sporadic occasions when this trash can would open and close its lid repeatedly. And even replacing it with a fresh set of batteries did not alleviate this behavior. I can only make an educated guess that something related to moisture is triggering the infrared sensor, because it did not matter whether the light was turned on or off, there was nothing visible yet something was interfering with it.
Towards the end of its useful lifespan in 2008, the motor would not be able to lift the lid wide open, and it would not be able to shut it completely. This whittled away whatever was left of my tolerance and turned the mundane task of cleaning up into an exercise in frustration.
I urge everyone to avoid this and other shoddy iTouchless models which were conceived in great earnest but do not deliver an end-product that is worth your money and meets the claims of opening flawlessly 100,000 times
