Tools and Hardware Reviews of Umbra 330638-560 Conceal Wall Book Shelf, Silver

Customer Review: Love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a little unsure about purchasing the shelves, but I went ahead and ordered two... and now I'm back ordering another! They're very simple to hang and use, seem to hold quite a bit (especially if you use paperbacks), and look great. I would definitely recommend this size, even though unfortunately the larger one tends to cost less, at least here on amazon. I debated over which size to get, and I'm glad I chose the small shelf because the large would have been way too big. The two hardbacks that I used for bases on my shelves are pretty average size (DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons, if that helps anyone...) and they work perfectly, so unless you're using a huge textbook or cookbook or something of that nature, go with the small! Also, I tried it out as a DVD shelf as well, just to see if it would work, and it does! I used a season of a show that had one of those covers that slips over the actual case as the base, and you secure it just like a book, then stack dvds on top! Overall, it's an awesome design and extremely functional, especially if you have limited storage space. Anything that can turn clutter into decoration gets an A in my book!

Customer Review: Multi-purpose
Summary: 5 Stars

You can use these anywhere, on any wall, with nearly any book. Also, you can set a picture frame or other decoration on the top book for a little extra pizazz... easy to install, use several to form a collection on a wall. Works best when bottom book is a hard back. Super easy to install.

Customer Review: My books are floating?!?!?!
Summary: 4 Stars

These shelves are a clever idea - books appear to be floating on your wall. As one can see from the picture on this product page, the back cover of the bottom book fits into a small groove. With other books placed on top, the bottom book is held securely in place. I installed several of these shelves in my kitchen for cookbooks. They work best for relatively light, narrow books (the shelf started to strain a bit under "The Joy of Cooking"). However, only the bottom book needs to be hard back.

Installation was extremely easy -- just screw the shelf into any wall normal wall (e.g., drywall, paneling). No anchors are needed. I was a bit skeptical at first and expected for the books to fall or the shelf to bend, but no accidents after over a week. All in all, these shelves work well and are an interesting way to display your books. I just think that they should be a bit less expensive, as they're basically metal brackets; hence the four stars.

Customer Review: Novel item, more or less for show
Summary: 3 Stars

As a bookshelf it's not really practical. In order for it to function as a bookshelf, you basically have to designate one of your least-red, large hard cover books as the main shelf, and even then you have to keep something on top of it to keep it from falling off. I wish the little clip underneath was a little bigger.

As far as holding books goes, this thing is great. You can throw one book on, and then pile a few more books on top of it, and it'll hold them like nobody's business. Getting them off, obviously, isn't as easy as a normal bookshelf because you have to make sure the bottom book is secure at all times, and if you want to read the bottom book you'll have to reconfigure the entire thing. I use it as a pretty nifty nightstand, and it holds up with a big hardcover book on the bottom, three light paperback books on top of that, and a lamp on top of those. It's very easy to knock the whole thing down though, so I don't think I'll put anything fragile or important on it.

Customer Review: One of those products you wished you had thought to invent
Summary: 5 Stars

This thing is so simple you almost feel at first like maybe you spent too much money on it. After all, it is just a piece of metal bent precisely. But once you install it and put some books on it, you realize that it truly is ingenious. I purchased one for my son who sleeps on a top bunk. We installed it at the foot of his bed (takes just five minutes to install), and now he has somewhere to keep bedtime reading and his glasses at night, without having to get back up to put away his glasses. It really couldn't be simpler, sturdier, or easier to install. Fantastic.
