Customer Review: Battery Life Very Short.

I'm surprised they are still selling these since they are nearly useless. I bought 2 for about $16 each delivered on a deal a day website. The first time I used one the charge lasted nearly 2 hours so I was pleased. However, the instructions don't tell you how long to charge the light for, and there is no charge completed indicator, so I charged it for about 24 hours again the second time. I'm pretty sure I fried the batteries by charging that long because I barely got 20 minutes of use the second time! It's too bad because it was a very handy and durable light the one and only time it worked properly (I have dropped it numerous times with no damage!). I determined on the second unit I had bought (using a voltmeter and determining delta V end of charge) that about 5 HOURS IS THE MAX. you should actually charge the light for. But even charging it correctly I only got 30 minutes of runtime. I think the NiMH cells are so old in some of these units that they are shot from not being recharged in such a long time. As another reviewer mentioned, if you get a unit with good batteries they work well. But for 30 bucks I wouldn't want to gamble on getting a good one!
Because I like tinkering with things I totally modified the light and added an 8 AA cell Eneloop rechargeable battery pack. (After opening up the light it turns out there is a tiny 3 cell AAA 600 mAh NiMH battery pack inside the unit - no wonder the run times suck.) I LOVE my light now because it lasts for 4 hours, but out of the box stock, the light is a piece of garbage! Save your money - especially for the ridiculous $30 they are charging now!
Incidentally, I spent about $25, and hours and hours of trial and error work, on the 8 cell battery pack modifications - so while it was educational and fun for me, I wouldn't recommend this to anybody unless you are really good at this type of work. I actually had to add a separate on/off switch between the battery and the light because I was getting substantial parasitic drain on the battery pack even though the stock internal batteries had been disconnected and the light was switched off! Took me days of testing to figure this out.
