Tools and Hardware Reviews of Vornado EH1-0032-28 TouchStone 500 Vortex Full-Room Electric Heater

Customer Review: Jasmine the kitten makes this worthless to me
Summary: 3 Stars

I like Vornado heaters a lot. They give out moderately cool air, so you sit around and think "it's not working, it's not working" until you suddenly realize the room is warm. And unlike the imitations, the heat is not as stratified--particularly if you have it set so the fan is always on.

I thought this one might be sturdier than the smaller ones (it might well be) and that the remote would be wonderful.

But...

The top is a perfect place for a kitten to rest, especially when it's heating. And if she wriggles a bit, she presses buttons, any buttons--but particularly mode and temperature. So the remote becomes useless. If I don't know what mode it was in, I can't change it to high heat with the remote (and I certainly haven't gotten used to which way is "up" temperature on the remote).

While I've been writing this she's managed to turn it off completely once, and another time beep the thermostat down below what the fan thinks is the room air temperature (it's at least 3 degrees too high in my space).

I could take it down to a small work-room in the barn, but there's a problem there, too. One that I suspect that Vornado did deliberately, so this would be perfect for supplementary heating in a coolish room. The lowest setting on the thermostat is 65. Way too high to use as an anti-freeze setting when the room is unoccupied.

Jasmine is a really cute and sweet kitten.

Customer Review: LOVE it!
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased the Vornado Touch Stone Vortex Heat 500 about a month ago. We have a room that is consistently colder than the other rooms in the house. We don't understand WHY it is colder since it was an addition, attached to the main central air /forced air heating unit, is actually BETTER insulated with more up-to-date windows, but is about 6 degrees colder (warmer in the summer) than any other room in the house. I plugged the Vornado in and the room is actually WARM! I am very impressed with this little, very quiet... you can't hardly tell it is running!... machine. I would definately recommend it to anyone that has this problem. We DO have a Sony TV/Remote, but the TV is in another room and doesn't affect the use of the machine. Actually, I leave ours on all the time and don't even need the remote. If this is the case I would go with the pp suggestion with getting the version without the remote. Had I realized that it was just as powerful I would have saved a few dollars and gone with the remoteless one for our use. HIGHLY recommend this item. I am very pleasantly surprised at how well this little unit works.

Customer Review: Love this heater
Summary: 5 Stars

We needed to heat an unheated basement office space (15' x 15') which gets quite cold in the winter. We have had several of those cheaper brands of heaters. They never hold up for long, make lots of noise, and leave cold spots in the room (even with oscillation). I was tired of having either cold feet or cold hands. They also took a long time to heat up the room in the morning when we turned it on. We decided to spring for the more expensive heater based on the great reviews of this product. What a difference! It heats up the room quickly, is quiet and leaves no cold spots. The room feels just like any other heated room in our home. It is well worth the price and we are thrilled with it.

Customer Review: MSRP vs. Amazon
Summary: 4 Stars

How is it that Amazon is selling this product (albeit through a partner vendor) for $50 over MSRP?

I've not received the product yet so I'll give it 4 stars so as not to mess up the average compiled here.

Customer Review: Motor noise.
Summary: 3 Stars

I own a similar Holmes space heater, and it is much quieter. The noise seems to come from the motor, not the fan blades. Its not that bad, and I wouldn't complain if I didn't already own a quieter one.
