Tools and Hardware Reviews of Waste King L-8000 Legend Series 1.0-Horsepower Continuous Feed Waste Disposer

Customer Review: BONE CHOMPING POWER!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I rarely review things, but I've been highly satisfied w/ our WK8k. I had never even HEARD of the brand, and assumed I would buy an InSinkErator...
Until I researched. I love the lifetime in-home warranty factor, and ...well, everything about this.
To those who said the installation was a pain, I have to wonder if they're from the competition. My biggest problem regarding installation was my space limitations, no fault of the product.

Dad bought an InSink brand for a little more than this one, off-the-shelf from HD/Lowe's, but got 1/2 the horsepower, no sound reduction, and it was to replace an had developed a leak! And, the InSink Dad owned was no more than ten years old. Thus, I am perfectly happy with going with a brand I've never heard of when I've got the peace of mind of a lifetime warranty.

We've had ours for ~six months. So far so good. Works great!

Customer Review: BUYER BEWARE: Atrocious Product and Customer Service
Summary: 1 Stars

On the first weekend after the device was initially delivered, I spent several hours trying to manipulate the rubber cushion mount properly while using the EZ kit that came with the product. I could not do it. I called Waste-King's customer service support line; however, their phone service does not operate on weekends (curious: when do they think people find time to install these things, during work hours?). Because we could not wait until Monday to recoup the service of our primary sink I called my father, a skilled electrician with 30 plus years experience with home improvements and plumbing, and he spent an hour trying to manipulate the rubber cushion mount properly. He could not do it. Finally, we called a professional PLUMBER, on a Saturday, and he too spent several hours trying to manipulate the rubber cushion mount properly. He could not do it. I paid a premium.

Okay, something was clearly wrong so I simply sent the defective device back via UPS and in the timely manner (14 days) in which the company requested. After another two weeks time, I finally received a response and found it to be completely unacceptable and offensive. Waste-King DENIED me a refund due to the condition of the instructions, a short tear in the shipping box, and the fact that items needed to be removed from the packaging. ABSURD! Waste-King's appeal to logos suggested that the $1-$2 to replace said box, instructions, and repackage is equal to $132.06 that I paid for this item. Again, absurd.

In Waste-King's email response, they clearly insinuated that I am either lying and did not hire a professional or that the professional was not reputable. I attached an invoice proving otherwise.

All told, I have spent a great deal of money on this product. In order to try to install this defective device I had to buy new tools, and, after a failed installation, I required a professional plumber despite the additional cost associated with weekend service charges. Moreover, I had to pay to ship the defective item from Waste-King to me and vice-versa! And then they had the audacity to suggest that I pay to have the SAME defective item shipped back to me.

In the end, Amazon came to my aid and reimbursed me. Thank you Amazon.

(Lesson learned: DO NOT BUY FROM THIRD-PARTY VENDORS!)

Waste-King, INDEED!

Customer Review: Back to the grind
Summary: 5 Stars

I replaced a piece of ISE Badger junk with this unit. When the ISE seized, the shaft seal went out, and it leaked internally. So I had no dishwasher unless I wanted to do the bucket brigade from below the disposer to the other side of the sink. Galvanized wetted parts plainly aren't the way to go for this service.

I had pretty well decided on the WK 3300 while researching / looking locally and then tried Amazon, finding it much cheaper. Since the WK 8000 was even cheaper, at the top of the Consumers Reports list, and Aneheim Mfg. offers a lifetime warranty (original purchaser), it was an obvious choice.

So I went the WK Direct / Cantex Trading route, with no problems. I ordered early on a Sunday morning; it arrived Wed. afternoon; and was running that nite. The paperwork says it came from Austin, TX. Included are both handwritten and printed notes that urge you to leave feedback at Amazon and contact them directly if you can't give 5 stars in every category; their staff receives bonus based on the feedback. Maybe when they shipped that customer the defective unit in early Sept., somebody at Cantex noticed the review, and has taken action to avoid a repeat.

EZ-mount: I was sure to get this, because I wanted the removable rubber baffle. (How else do you get the grunge off that thing?) It should be a simpler install for most people. Only concern is that the vibration will loosen the plastic locknut, but I guess the mfr. has looked at this. Anyway, it's accessible to tighten if it happens. Rubber gasket under the sink flange instead of messing with the plumber's putty - yea! Two-position locking ring (hold the unit up but let it swivel / locked in place) - yea!. The instructions implore you many times to be sure to get the lower cushion mount in right. If the locking ring would slide higher - up over the flange threads - it would really help with this feat.

Plumbing: Since this WK is larger in both height and diameter, this just required hack sawing the plastic pipe and outlet nozzle for a fit.

Electrical: Didn't have to disconnect the old unit; just cut the romex and installed a plug. No telling how many 2-prong female plugs there are in my house, but had to make the dash to the local hardware for a grounded one. Mounted the plugs high on the rear sink compartment wall with a zip tie to help avoid them seeing water.

Noise: Can't understand other comments; my unit is much quieter than the Badger 5, even without the detergent trick. It's a ss sink.

Customer Review: Bad to the bone . . .
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say? Installation was a snap, it is far quieter and much more powerful than my last disposal. I've had the unit for about a year and never had to reset it or any other issues. I own a duplex and when the time comes to replace the disposal of other unit it will definitely be with the a Waste King. I would have gave it six stars if it installed itself. ;)

Customer Review: Beast!
Summary: 4 Stars

This garbage disposal is an animal! It can pretty much handle anything you dish to it. We have had it for approximately 5 months now, and I'm very pleased that I chose this over the others available. Only two comments regarding the Waste King (which are not necessarily negative)...this garbage disposal is not quiet. I think you can expect with a 1HP disposal that there will be some vibrations and noise...if you are looking for a quiet, quaint unit under your sink, this is not the disposal for you. Also, when the sink is quite full and water begins to collect, I would expect that when the disposal is turned on it would essentially suck everything down the drain. Sometimes this does not happen, and you have to assist by pushing food/ waste down the drain with a spoon. Overall, I'm happy with our purchase and would buy the same brand again.
