Tools and Hardware Reviews of Watts 5YR Premier Filter 5-Year/20,000-Gallon Inline Ice Maker Water Filter

Customer Review: Great tasting water
Summary: 5 Stars

Using this filter for my refrigerator water dispensor. The water tastes great. Not much else to say. Hopefully I won't have to replace it for pretty much ever.

Customer Review: I use em on commercial ice makers
Summary: 4 Stars

I buy these for 29.99 at home depot, the exact same model. We have some 500lb/day commercial ice makers, they get to be a real mess when the water isn't filtered, these filters do the job cheaply and last for a fair amount of time, for us we replace every year, but they REALLY get used. I have never seen black stuff come out of them, I just install one and run a 30min clean cycle on the ice machine and have never seen black specs in the ice. (The 30 min clean cycle dumps about 5 gallons of water, before making ice).

Pro: cheap, works well, again cheap

Cons: has to be unscrewed to replace and water must be turned off, where as some more expensive have 1/4 turn replacement filters.

Customer Review: I'm glad I purchased this item
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had my fridge for over 10 years and have been putting in water filters yearly. Lately the same supplier that told us the filters must be changed on a yearly basis changed the recommendations to six months. Then they changed their prices upward as well. When I saw the 5year filter I nearly fell off my computer chair and ordered one immediately. I received one in a few days and using my existing parts hooked it up in less than 5 minutes. It took about six cupfulls of charcoal cleansing water to clear up the flow and we were in business. I frankly don't know if this filter will last the full five years, but if we still get good water in three years I will be most pleased.Watts 5YR Premier Filter 5-Year/20,000-Gallon Inline Ice Maker Water Filter

Customer Review: Ineffective as a Water Filter - Does Not Remove Impurities
Summary: 2 Stars

Nobody seems to like to see a bad review without actual facts based on my years of experience here at Amazon. After I installed this filter, I decided to conduct a test of its filtering capability. I ordered a water tester here on Amazon to determine how effective that big 5 year water filter is. In a word, ineffective. The unfiltered reading on water in my house is 246 ppm (parts per million). The water coming out of the filter is 241 ppm - virtually the same. And yes, I have thoroughly purged the filter by running the water wide open for half an hour. Actually, I probably have at least a total run time of three or four hours by now. I've been using it every day for over a week. So I decided to test the filtered water on the front door of my new Samsung French Door Refrigerator. Guess what? I got a reading of 206 ppm. I guess this water filter is only filtering out rocks and gravel and maybe sand, but that's about it. All that installation work and money down the drain, quite literally. Here is the link to the water tester I ordered. I like this water tester.

I had a water tester previously, but I accidentally broke it. I have a condo in downtown Shanghai. The water reading there is 224 ppm. And believe me, the water from the lower Yangtze River is not good. And my brand new home here in Conroe, Texas near Houston is right next to the lake. The lake is literally on the other side of my street. I thought the city water quality would be pretty good here, but it isn't. My previous home was a few miles north of Berkeley, California. The water straight out of the faucet had a reading of only 38 ppm. Now that was excellent quality water and it really tasted good, too. I was hoping this filter would produce that level of water, but sad to say, it doesn't do anything as far as dissolved solids go. Technically I should give this filter a one star rating. But at least it flows water without leaking, so I gave it one star extra for that.

So now I wonder which water filter to try next. Does anybody have a suggestion with actual data to back up the claims?

Customer Review: It's a water filter that filters water. Pretty amazing, huh?
Summary: 4 Stars

This replace my old 1,500 gallon ice and water filter with a 20k gallon filter for a very reasonable price. It was easy to install and seems to be doing what a water filters do, so, mission accomplished! I wish I could say it turns water to wine but that may be asking a bit much for 30 some-odd bucks.
