The Weller soldering station is simply wonderful. The adjustability of the temperature enables me to safely solder a wide range of wire and component sizes. The iron reaches the proper temperature in short order and holds it quite nicely.
For perspective, I am not an electronics professional, just an intermittent electronics hobbyist. Over the years, however, I gained considerable experience soldering - having built ham radio gear, repairing televisions and radios, and most recently building a tube-based guitar amplifier. I should have plunked down the money for one these soldering stations years ago because it eliminates the need for multiple irons and it made me better at soldering due to the good ergonomics of this iron.

I use the "big brother" to this unit at work - the EC2002M. I actually prefer the WES51 since the handle on the pencil is smaller and easier to use. A great little iron.Customer Review: Excellent soldering iron.

I've really enjoyed using this iron. My old iron was inexpensive and I got by with it, but it really wasn't suitable for my current project. I am building several prototype circuits for a ham radio project. I needed something smaller with temperature control. The WES51 is very comfortable to handle and very light. It warms up quickly and holds it's temperature. Depending on the variety of work you anticipate doing, you may need extra tips. I ordered an extra tip for really small work, but I will need a larger tip as well.Customer Review: Excellent unit!

For quite some time I was struggling with the two soldering pencils that I had on hand -- specifically, trouble melting the solder. It was very frustrating and added much more of my time to complete simple projects. I decided to purchase the Weller WES51, and what a difference!! After having been let down by a Radio Shack brand iron that was impossible to find replacement tips for, I opted for a well-known name & I'm glad I did. This iron is a champ. It doesn't have some of the wiz-bang features of higher-end products, but it's a solid setup. The stand is heavy and has good rubber feet to keep it in place on a work surface. Tip replacement is easy & replacement tips are easily found.
