Tools and Hardware Reviews of Whirlpool 4396841 PUR Push Button Side-by-Side Refrigerator Water Filter, 1-PackCustomer Review: Better than rocks I suppose Summary: 2 Stars
I moved to a location where the water is extremely hard and full of particulates. It's pretty difficult to believe it really is municipal water. In any case, I bought my refrigerator so that I'd have easy access to the filter, in this case this filter.
From the other reviews it has, it must be doing something right I guess. But when faced with horrible tap water it just can't keep up. The massive calcium drip stains on the water dispense paddle, the foul flavored ice... these all tell the tale. I bought a pack of 6 with the fridge so I can replace them and each filter has been as bad as the last.
I'm pretty disappointed and will probably disassemble my last filter and just put in a input-output tube inside. Right now I get water out of the fridge and use that water just to fill up my older, more conventional pitcher filter. Funny enough: it's a PUR filter pitcher. I guess PUR lent their name to a really crappy product this time around.
I know if *I* were depending on this filter for clean water, I'd ask a friend to bring their pitcher filter over so I can test before/after myself.
Customer Review: Cheaper than whirlpool.com Summary: 5 Stars
This is the same filter that came with our new whirlpool fridge. When the light turned yellow to order a new filter I went to whirlpool's site. I found it on amazon for $10 cheaper and free shipping. Filter works great and was exact one that came with fridge. Great deal if you ask me.
Customer Review: Cheaper to buy through Amazon.com Summary: 5 Stars
We bought our Whirlpool refrigerator last year & have changed out the cartridges every 6 months without fail as the indicator in our fridge changes color. These cartridges are generally pricey in department stores (Sears, Best Buy, etc...), however it is a bit cheaper on Amazon, plus free shipping that was reasonably within 7 days. I'd highly recommend purchasing this item for the Whirlpool refrigerator.
Customer Review: Clean, Clear water Summary: 5 Stars
This filter came quick, installed easily and works well. I expected the water flow to be a bit more since this filer was labeled a "fast fill". I previously had a cyst reducing filter in the fridge and thought that it would flow slower than this one but they are about the same.
Customer Review: Difficult to install Summary: 4 Stars
09/14/10 - Last year I bought all four Whirlpool appliances at a very good discount and I am really happy with the purchase. My beef with KitchenAid and Whirpool refrigerators, though, is how difficult it is to remove the bottom water filters. I am a really handy person and generally do not need assembly instructions, etc.; however, unless you have instructions to remove these filters and now I do thanks to info right on this site, but too late this time since I had already removed it after I twisted, turned, yanked, pliered the thing to death which made it to pop out. It is difficult to guess that, as on my filter, you have to push a button to the left, etc. It would seem that for the so many years the high-paid inventors who design the systems would have figured a simple left turn screw out and right turn screw in installation. Are they thinking of people of any age who cannot bend or lay down to install? Or who do not have the strength to fight it all the way until the unit comes out? They would sell more filters if it were easier and Whirpool had provided instructions on their site, other than a simple picture with an arrow pointing to the right. That did not do it! My filter, contrary to some feedback, worked perfectly and so does the fridge. The minus one star goes to the filter designers...who would make very poor rocket scientists. ARE YOU LISTENING, WHIRLPOOL???
