Tools and Hardware Reviews of Wizard Detectors 25506 Lumber Wizard III Metal Detector

Customer Review: A good, basic metal 3 Stars

Great for large areas to search for metal, but not so good on narrowing down the location of said metal.

Customer Review: A real blade saver
Summary: 5 Stars

After learning how expensive it is to sharpen saw blades, and my habit of dumpster diving at several woodworking shops for wood and how difficult it was to always find staples or other wood fastening devices in the "used" wood - I found the Lumber Wizard a must have device. True to its description - it is a Wizard at finding metal in wood. Like many have said - well worth the money - It is a bit large and the accordian line folds on the wand itself are a bit confusing as to whether it detects metal in only this area, but certainly no cause for dissatisfaction at all.

This is a real winner. Worth its weight in gold. Not only has our workshop made this a mandatory tool for anyone using one of our 26 planers but I have one at my home shop that has saved me on several occasions. I bought a Garrett Security Scanner...and it does not scan even half as deep as a Wizard. Wizard also has a rock solid warranty. We had one unit that had a slight problem and not only did the folks at Wizard replace it they did it quickly and did not put us to any amount of the usual torture that most companies put customers through. I have to say this is one great tool. I highly recommend it. Also there are several great articles in the top woodworking magazines.

Customer Review: Did the job - no exceptions!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the lumber Wizard III metal detector to use before planing down some used rough cut pine that I had. This item performed perfectly, with no exceptions. The boards that I was scanning were 1"x9" pine, and when I started the process I quickly learned that I couldn't scan the boards while they were stacked. I spent awhile looking for something in one board because the detector kept going off in one spot. I finally found out that there was a small carpet tack in the board below the one that I was scanning. This detector was plenty strong enough to detect small nails, staples and BB's in the boards. After scanning with the Lumber Wizard I was able to plane them down with confidence, and did not find any objects in them that the wizard did not detect.

I would highly recommend this product for this purpose!

Customer Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a nice tool and certainly has some value, but it is NOT as described. I've only tested mine, but it is no where near as sensitive as it is described to be. It makes me curious as to who is writing the reviews. I tested it with a brand new battery and did work extensively with the sensitivity adjustment. First, they claim that it penetrates up 6" of wood. I tested it with douglas fur and found that 2" is more accurate for a large nail (10d) and 1" for a staple. It will detect a large metal object, like a toolbox, from 6" away, but I imagine most alert woodworkers would notice if a toolbox were imbedded in a piece of lumber. Second, they claim a large scanning are (12"x 2.5") however the actually scanning area is just at the top half (6"x2.5"). I don't mean to be skeptical, but it seams to be very misleading. Third, for $100 you might think that it would come with a case. Finally, if the smaller version of the product, the Little Wizard II metal detector, works as it is advertised for only $20, then I can't figure out how this one is worth 5 times as much.
