Tools and Hardware Reviews of Zibra ZPCOPEN-OR Open It Universal Package Opener

Customer Review: Bright colors are easy to find this mediocre tool
Summary: 3 Stars

I received this a couple weeks ago and try to use it every day, but I do find that I tend to grab the folding utility knife and scissors instead of this cute looking tool. The designers intended to create a catchy tool and I guess if you use this for opening packages and nothing else, it should last for a couple years, maybe more. I personally have a little difficulty opening the little latch which allows me to even use this item, hence I grab my other more solid and trustworthy tools. The silicony feel to the handle is pleasant, but it also seems rather lightweight. I don't trust the little extendable blade because it's not comfortable at the end of this, and the screwdriver has not worked for me the one time I needed, so I can't give those high marks. Since this is marked as a "Universal Package Opener," they wanted to include as many options as possible, but I must ask what package needs a little screwdriver? On the positive, I would imagine that if a person with arthritic hands is able to open the little clasp or simply always leaves this tool in open and ready to use form, it probably is more comfortable than scissors to use and likely will be greatly appreciated.

Customer Review: Broke on first use
Summary: 1 Stars

Cheaply made and poor quality. Defective. Opening an ordinary plastic wrapped package, the handles opening too far, and the blades would no longer cut in scissor style. Disassembled and got it working again, at least for the moment, but that should not be necessary. Avoid this product.

Customer Review: Cheaply made, poorly designed.
Summary: 1 Stars

Have to use 2 hands to open the blades, the spring is useless.
If you are opening a package, you need 3 hands, one to hold the package, the other two to operate the opening and closing of the blades.
This thing is a waste of money.

Customer Review: Cheaply made, useless extras, but it works
Summary: 4 Stars

I see that there are a significant number of people here who gave this poor reviews because it flat-out didn't work. If the snippers were improperly manufactured, I can totally believe that. And I can totally believe that that would happen. You can't believe how cheaply these are manufactured. The pair I have has weird swirl marks throughout the plastic handles, the darker silicone-like edge has overflow in some places, and doesn't go far enough in others, there were scar marks all over it directly from the (ironically, clamshell) packaging, the blades are clearly very cheap steel, and the extras are so cheap as to be virtually useless.

That said, mine actually performs the function of getting into clamshell packaging very well. The basic design is fairly well thought out. The cutting blades are offset and angled back towards your hand so that your hand is fairly far away from the packaging, there is a very large gap at the base of the blades so that the dross doesn't impede progress, the handle-to-blade length ratio is very high, to provide maximum leverage, and the sprung handle works well to prevent the snippers from getting stuck closed. The only design improvement I can think of would be some sort of guard to push the dross away and prevent it from ever hitting your hand.

Oh, and having it built by trained monkeys instead of the drunken ones they apparently stole from the zoo to make them.

Customer Review: Cuts OK but be careful about pinching your fingers
Summary: 2 Stars

I have tried several package openers.

Utility shears work fairly well, but my fingers often get cut by the sharp edges of the cut plastic.

This Open It! tool does help keep my fingers away from the sharp plastic, however, the handle is poorly designed and has a tendency to pinch your fingers if you do not hold it correctly with you finger tips. Because there is no gap between the handles, if you hold it next to your palm to get a more powerful grip, the skin of your fingers can get caught between the handles. After pinching myself a couple of times, I started wearing gloves when I use this tool.

If the manufacturer removed the screwdriver and utility knife and left a gap between the handles, or designed the handles more like scissors, this would be a much safer tool to use.
