Customer Review: Get it just for the clippers

4.5 Stars. I've had my "Open It" for about 11 months now and I use them all the time for opening boxes and those damn clamshell/blister packages. The clippers are powerful and able to easily cut through any plastic packaging I've come across - the handles give you great leverage and a comfortable grip, so I've never been forced to use two hands to try to cut through anything, like I've had to sometimes with regular or even "heavy duty" scissors.
Most of the complaints are focused on the secondary features: the screwdriver and the boxcutter blade. These are certainly its weak points - a real boxcutter or screwdriver are definitely MUCH better at those tasks. BUT - I often find that when I have this tool out to open a package, I often have also find I then have a light need for a screwdriver (say, to open the battery compartment on a kids toy) or a cutter (say, to cut the shrinkwrap on a DVD case) and for that kind of simple purpose, the Open It's cutter or screwdriver is handy and saves me from needing to get up and pull out another tool. For light-duty stuff like that which you might need while you already have the cutters out, they are nice to have, but not make-or-break features. These are primarily sturdy clippers and the rest is just gravy.

...because this one doesn't. I've had it for about 6 months and never could get it to work very well. The light plastic clamshells it makes decent work of, but try opening the ones with slightly thicker plastic. The first cut into the package might be easy and then it gets difficult. And I had the cutter blades dinged up in no time. From cutting plastic packaging? Yes. Which tells me the metal is soft, cheap quality. Also, note that the clasp that holds the handles closed is too loose and flimsy. Often when you're cutting it jiggles closed and locks the handles together, which is extremely frusterating. Last night my wife made the mistake of cutting some lightweight wire with this tool. Which bent the blades out of alignment now so it won't close. I threw it in the trash without any remorse. The bottom line is that this is a cheaply made piece of junk and it's not a big loss.Customer Review: Good but still keeping box cutter

I order a lot of stuff and got this in the hopes it would help with packaging. So far it has been very little use. The main reason is that when it comes to opening boxes, I still prefer my box cutter over the box cutter in this. For this, you need to remove the safety cap, and then slide it out. But unlike my other box cutter, you have to keep holding the switch to keep the box cutter out, which is a bit annoying. Also, it has a smaller blade for box cutter, which hasn't been a huge problem cut could be for some things.
Besides the box cutter, I haven't needed to use screwdriver in it. I also have only needed the scissor part of it for cutting some of those little plastic I things, but nothing besides that. Still, I can't wait to see how well it works on that annoying hard plastic.
Overall, it is nice and probably worth having for opening plastic alone, but a pair of Scissors and a Box Cutter will probably work just as good. And it's box cutter isn't the best so I'd still get a normal box cutter.

The secret to this tool is the offset blades; this allows you to cut any size package without the handles getting in the way.
The blades are very sharp and cut through the plastic very quickly.
I keep these in our kitchen junk drawer; my spouse uses them to cut flower stems before putting them in a vase.
I've never used the screwdriver; I think this was a "throw-in" to make it more attractive ("Honey, look, it's also a screwdriver").
This may seem to be a frivolous tool, but I think it is worth every penny.

This is exactly what I've been looking for to open all those hard plastic packages I get! Found it for a cheaper price at a retail store, but not gonna return it to save 5 bucks. Would recommend to anybody!
