Tools and Hardware Reviews of iRobot 500 Series Roomba Vacuum-Cleaning Robot with On-Board Scheduling

Customer Review: 5 to 1 for the 550
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought a Roomba back in January (well December 26, but they didn't deliver until January).

Initially, it worked great. Oh sure, the thing would be stopped somewhere with an error light flashing occasionally wanting the brushes cleaned or the bin emptied. Other than that, I thought I had a good thing.

Then, last week it started clunking. It would come off the charging stand and run for a few seconds, then almost stall, and then slowly amble away, clunking every second.

They tell me the red gearbox is shot.

It will take a proper repair to make this thing work and to keep a customer.

This is our second Roomba, we had a Disco series (biglots $149, we got it on sale for $109) before this for two years. After over 600+ uses our R2 unit decided to join the angels :(

We love the roombas and they have been very useful in our house.

The 500 series irobots are about 50% as loud(not very loud) as the 400 series (discovery)and have a few cool new features. Examples are: better suction, better main brush, digital display, onboard scheduling... and a talking lady that actually tells you what the error might be, such as "please clean the main brushes". FYI, the older robots worked off "beeps" (e.g. - 1 beep after the uh-oh beep meant to clean the brushes). It should be noted that the Disco we had got stuck from time to time and could not dock with the charging station 99% of the time, however the 500 series (550 - from Costco $269) seems to always find its home and amazingly has never gotten stuck! The future is now.(har d har)

For those people who have never had a roomba, YES they really do work and no I don't have stock in the company (hmmm, are they publicly traded?). However it should be noted that our house is 80% hardwood and really does not have alot of obstacles.

Lastly, I tell you this... our robot runs everyday and still manages to find all sorts of dust bunnies and debris... it's actually kind of gross.

Customer Review: A bit disappointed
Summary: 3 Stars

It doesn't work as well as the menu says with in terms of automation.
1. The cleaning path is so random that some areas are repeated many times while some areas are not covered. The menu says it calculate its own efficient path, but it seems to me that it is randomly bounces against any object.

2. It is supposed to come back to the home base when it is done its cleaning cycle or battery runs low. Well, it cleans my room for a lot longer than 25 minutes(factory estimate) until it runs out of battery and dies without coming back to home base. Next time, I have to press on "dock" button hope it comes back to home base.

3. Even with two light houses placed at between rooms as instructed by the menu, the robot doesn't know how to come back to home base. I finally press "dock" button, but still I have to do a lot of interference to force it back to base.

It does do a good job on cleaning dirt and hair.

Customer Review: A dream come true until...

I looked heartily at the reviews before buying one of these. I decided that I would become a critical consumer and test the product, thinking a cleaning robot was certainly worth that kind of attention!!!!

After using it once, we named it Spot. Naming it is good because you then treat it very well. And, we did. Inspected and cleaned it often, according to the manual. We ran it again and again over 2 weeks. It seemed to do carpet and tile very well.

Then, yesterday after a full day of vacuuming, I sent it "home" and cleaned it thoroughly. This morning, I set it to task in our 2 small bathrooms, ensuring that everything anti-robot was off the floor. It stopped in the second bathroom and complained hysterically that the wheels, then the brushes, then the front wheel all needed cleaning. We did all. The brushes stopped working altogether.

We're so glad that we had this unit for less than 3 weeks. It's going back, folks. We won't even bother to work with customer support or anybody else. With the care we gave Spot, no unit should ever fail so quickly and with so little trauma.
