The Irobot does a good job of cleaning up after our family with little kids who drop a lot of food. You can tell the difference after robo has done the clean-up when walking with your bare feet. Eight months ago my teenaged son suggested that this was exactly what his mother needed to make her life easier. Having sold vacuums for a year while I was in school, and understanding the principals behind cleaning floors, especially carpet, I was skeptical to say the least. How could a machine of this small size generate the air movement and the carpet agitation, sufficient to really clean?
I read the reviews about the side brushes breaking and needing to be replaced, and wondered if this was such a good idea. Well he pressed on - the gadget side of him winning out - and it was purchased and given to my wife as a gift.
I am glad that he had the vision to see just how useful this tool would be. It is easy to use, saves time, allowing multiple cleaning tasks to be done at once, and it cleans REALLY WELL. We have a commercial grade Electrolux vacuum and I have intentionally set the Roomba to clean a room immediately after cleaning it with the Electrolux. I do not know were the Roomba extracts the extra dirt from, but it always returns at least 1/2 full with dirt and dust from deep within the carpet. They both pick up the dog hair and the surface dirt, but the Roomba seems to be able to dig deeper. Perhaps it is just the extra time which the Roomba will spend on the room verses the once or twice over which a human operator will give.
After 8 months we are still on all our original brushes, including the side brush, and the Roomba is used to clean nearly every floor inch of a 4500 sqft house, at least once per week.
I am a believer.

This Roomba was bought to replace an earlier Discovery model that had stopped working. Roomba's support always want you at home to trouble shoot the cleaner and that's difficult to do when you have a job that keeps you away from home during their service hours, so it never got fixed. This Roomba has some excellent improvements in capacity, scheduling, maintainability, and overall smartness. I am very pleased with it and after reading the new owners manual's section on care and feeding, I pulled out my old Discovery Roomba, gave it a good cleaning and it's working too. Occasionally the 500 series will not go to the next room when using the beacons after completing one room, but I expect that is due to the large size and varied geometry of my rooms. I have had no issues other than that with the beacons as long as you locate them properly. To use as a barrier they need to be on the other side of the door frame that leads to the "restricted" area. To use as a beacon they need to be located so that the Roomba can see and home in on them after it completes a room. I haven't had a need to use the scheduling feature yet, but I find it interesting that even if I am not using the beacons they turn on and off even with the Roomba cleaning in another room behind closed doors. The only reason that I don't give this five stars is because they do require care and cleaning after every use if you want them to keep working correctly. As a final comment, my wife is probably one of the most anti-gadget persons that you'll ever meet, but she even said that she missed the old Roomba and encouraged me to get this one.Customer Review: Amazing
