Tools and Hardware Reviews of iRobot Roomba 400 Vacuum-Cleaning Robot, OrangeCustomer Review: Couldn't live without a Roomba Summary: 5 Stars
I love my Roomba so much, I bought one for my fanatical housekeeping Mom for Christmas, and even she admits--It does a fantastic job!
Customer Review: Easy as pie Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for my aging mom, whose eyesight is going but of course she denies it. On each of the two days I got to visit, we set Roomba free in her "clean" apartment and left for a while. Both days it was absolutely full of dust bunnies and other detritus when we came back. The one-button controls and ease of emptying are a real plus.
Customer Review: Good but needs watching Summary: 3 Stars
This vacuum picks up great! But I had to watch because it got itself caught under some furniture and it seems to go in the same spot over and over. I had to pick it up and put it in an area that it had not touched after 15 minutes. If it is in a bedroom with the door closed than it does a great job but in a living room dining room combo is when it doesnt get EVERYWHERE. I would buy this for myself or someone else again but buy the docking station that goes with it.
Customer Review: Good, but has a few issues Summary: 3 Stars
I like the Roomba 400 I bought. There are a few issues. When it goes from carpet to hardwood, it seems to leave a cluster of the dust cup contents right where it transitions from carpet to floor. Specifically, I have a runner in a hallway that always has pet hair around the edges from where the Roomba leaves it behind. I have 1 dog and 1 cat. Also, the hair/dust seems to collect on the filter and it has to be emptied after about 15-20 minutes, otherwise it stops really picking anything up. If allowed to run the entire 45 minute cycle, I find it most effective to empty 2-3 times if possible. Overall, it's a good product. I was just hoping to eliminate the dustpan, but you still have to use it.
Customer Review: Great item if you can find it on sale! Summary: 4 Stars
I managed to find it for $70 here on Amazon, and at that price this is a great little vaccuum. This same model was selling at KMart for $149 (Model 400 and 405 are exactly the same inside), and $95 at Big Lots. It does pick up an amazing amount of dust and debris. It's also fascinating to watch as it finds its way around.
I only give it 4 stars because the battery could be better. It lasts plenty long for cleaning the recommended 2 rooms, but the instructions to keep it plugged in all the time seem like a waste of electricity. I don't do this, and this may result in reduced battery life. Leaving it unplugged for more than a few hours results in a much longer charge cycle before it is "ready" (green light) to go to work.
I recommend cleaning your home thoroughly once with a regular vacuum, then setting the Roomba loose once or twice a week. No need to buy the fancy room barrier things... just set large books or heavy objects down where you want to box the Roomba in. Taping down rugs (I use wide blue painters tape) helps keep Roomba from trying to eat the rug corners.
All the Roombas (except the "Dirt Dog" model, which doesn't have a vacuum, just good floor brushes and a larger collection bin) work about the same, so no need to waste money on the expensive models unless you are too lazy to push a button on top of the Roomba.
