Tools and Hardware Reviews of simplehuman Step Trash Can, Rectangular, Fingerprint-Proof, 10 Gallons, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: FInally....a dog-proof trash can Summary: 5 Stars
Love this Simple Human trash can. Arrived extremely quickly from Amazon and this is honestly the first trash can our Border Collie has been unable to get into. We used to hide our trash can in the bathroom every morning before we left so we were nervous the first day leaving him alone at home with this one. We even put tempting things in the trash just to see. It's been about two months now and not once has he managed to get the lid open or knock it over. It's very sturdy/stable (heavy enough that he doesn't try to knock it over yet not too heavy to move around when I clean the floor) and when the lid closes it actually closes down into the sides so there is no edge for him to get a nose or a foot into to pop it open. I highly recommend if you have a dog who loves trash.
Customer Review: Good trash can with some inconveniences Summary: 3 Stars
I'll make it simple.
The GOOD:
- Aesthetically pleasing design. Sleek. As nice as trash cans get.
- Some nice functionality; you can keep the lid open, it closes slowly, the inside trash can gets lifted easily.
THE BAD:
- Very expensive for a trash can.
- The "fingerprint-proof" claim on the product title is a flat-out lie. Not only is in not accurate, it's the exact opposite. Damned thing is a fingerprint magnet. I don't even understand how they can make that claim; it's bewildering. No matter what you do, ugly fingerprints will be all over the surface and it WILL look very dirty. So you have to be willing to become a slave to the trash can and clean it constantly. Kind of a joke.
- Comes with a slightly pungent 'plasticky' smell...like "new toy made in China' kind of smell. Hopefully it will fade.
Customer Review: Quiet, clean & as sophisticated a "trash can" can be! Summary: 5 Stars
Love this can - new metal lid and hinge makes prior breakage issues a thing of the past! Doesn't make a sound when it closes, fingerprint resistant, easy to empty and reload bag. You won't be disappointed! We've had the new one for about a month now - the other one with black plastic hinge and lid lasted 2 1/2 years. Hopefully this new model will hold out far longer!
Customer Review: The perfect kitchen trash can Summary: 5 Stars
Well constucted. The important parts are made of metal. They also redesigned the inner plastic can with a serrated hole that looks like a star. The plastic trash bag can be pullled tight and pulled through the star, thus keeping the bag tight so that it can't be seen from the outside once the lid is closed. I do not need to use their expensive trash bags -I can use my Costco trashbags. This is the perect kitchen trash can. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: Well worth the price! Summary: 5 Stars
If you have stainless steel appliances in your house and want a decorative and functional solution to the trash problem, these simplehuman rectangular trash cans fit the bill. I bought the 13 gal/50L for regular trash (along with the Q-sized trash bags) and the 10 gal (with the J-sized bags) for the recycling. Both cans are the same depth front-to-back and look like they came as a unit. I was actually surprised by the width of the 10-gallon can. Like the 50 gal, the bin is a bit trapezoid in shape and accommodates larger items than you'd think at its largest end. I'm able to slip one of those Digiorno pizza boxes into the widest part of the 10 gal without having to fold the box. The trash bags are custom-fit for these cans, being a tiny bit larger than the ones you'd find at grocery store. What I love about them is that they are constructed to give a square shape that matches that of the cans. This makes for easy stacking when its time to take the trash out and put it in my trash collection bins, thus saving space. They are made of tough plastic, with drawstring handles and a reinforced top of the bag that folds over the inner bin. In all the time I've been using them (a year now), I have never had one slip.
One of the nicest parts of the can is the inner bin, which can be removed from all of their units and refitted with another bag. When cleaning out the refrigerator, I often bungee-cord one of the bins to a small hand-cart, fill it up with the (usually heavy) discarded items. This way I can just wheel the heavier bag out to the trash bins.
Don't worry about not being able to find the trash bags once you buy this. I get them at my local "bed and bath" (and beyond) store, and if you save those 20% off coupons that come in the mail, the price ends up being about $6.50 for a package of 20. A little higher than the generic bags but worth it. I use the generic bags in a pinch but although they fit, it's a bit tight, and I don't get that boxy shape from the bag.
Yes these cans are very expensive but in this case it is entirely worth it. What separates them from the cheaper knock-offs is the quality (or even the presence) of an inner bin, the easy pedal-open mechanism, the soft-close lid that makes no noise, and the ability to lock open when needed. I would buy both of these all over again in a heartbeat.
